diy: the art of furoshiki

In an effort to cut back on our wrapping paper usage this holiday season, we're turning to Japan for inspiration. Furoshiki is a traditional Japanese fabric wrap that dates back over 1,200 years. There are endless ways to wrap a gift using fabric, but we're keeping it simple by showing you our two faves. We love that furoshiki allows you to give a gift within a gift. How To Wrap A Gift Box With Fabric

1. Lie your furoshiki fabric square face down on a flat surface. Place your small gift box in the middle at a diagonal, so that the flat sides of your box point to the corners of the fabric.

2. Pull a corner of the fabric up and over the top of the box. Depending on how small your box is, you may need to fold the fabric in on itself first to hide the excess.

3. Repeat step 2 with the opposite corner of the fabric.

4. Grab the remaining corners of the fabric and pull them upwards.

5. Tie them into a knot on top of the box to finish.

How To Wrap A Wine Bottle With Fabric

1. Lie your furoshiki fabric square face down on a flat surface. Place your wine bottle in the middle at a diagonal, so that the top and bottom of the bottle point to the corners of the fabric.

2. Pull the corner of the fabric at the bottom of the bottle up and over the top of the bottle.

3. Pull the corner of the fabric at the top of the bottle down towards the bottom of the bottle.

4. Grab the remaining corners of the fabric and wrap them around the front of the bottle.

5. Pull the same corners around towards the back of the bottle and tie them into a knot to finish.
